P. Saran, a 9th-grade student from Government High School in Choodapuram, Hosur, built a low-cost microscope using everyday waste items.

This microscope can help observe blood cells, onions cells, and more.

Despite limited resources in his rural village, Saran enjoys experimenting and creating with what he has at hand.

His science teacher, Ms. Sathayavathi, and the headmaster encourage his innovation.

The idea for the microscope came unexpectedly when a ball refill pen fell on his mobile display, creating colorful reflections.

This sparked the idea of using cartridge pen cells to make microscopes.

Making Science accessible and fun, the ILP way! By Dr. Sudhira

The class is boisterous as always as they wait for their science teacher to conduct the next class. And she comes in with a couple of balloons and a candle with a matchstick. Before the students realize what is happening, she asks a kid to blow one of the balloons and get the other balloon filled with water. And then light a candle.ย

The class is suddenly silent and are curious to know what’s happening here. Next she queries them on what would happen to the balloons, one filled with air and another with water, if placed near the candle flame. The students are thinking, and she gestures to one of the kids to take it slowly towards the flame.ย

Boom! The one with air blows up first and the kids are stunned to see this. And the one with water hasn’t yet burst.ย

Now, the teacher has got the attention of all the kids and the kids are now trying to figure out what just happened. There begins the class on the effect of heat on air and water. The teacher, after hearing the possible reasons the kids give, explains that air molecules heat up faster than water molecules, thereby expanding faster, which eventually resulted in the balloon bursting. The kids are still in awe and are now able to relate and appreciate what happened a few minutes ago!ย

This is how India Literacy Project (ILP)’s science experiment kits have enabled teachers to make science accessible and fun.ย ย

The science experiment kit was born out of ILP’s flagship initiative, Multi-Dimensional Learning Space (MDLS). During 2015-16, the initial version of the science kit was put together by a team of volunteers and in-house teams led by Mr Pramod Sridharamurthy, Mr Harish K, and Ms Kirthana Sathyamurthy.ย

The science kit has evolved over the years, and has seen many changes including newer instruments (like Foldscope) and aids that are enabling teachers to use them in their classes. The present one is the fourth version and incorporates feedback received from teachers using the kit in their daily classroom activities. The kit now supports over 150 experiments that can be used to explain over 200 concepts from class 5 to 10.ย

The kit has been built using low-cost components that are available even in rural India. Most of the components used in the kit are not specialized and can be easily replenished even in remote schools allowing children to touch, feel and build without fear of breaking expensive items.

The kit consists of items that encourage children to tinker and build new applications of the concepts they learn, as opposed to assembling ready-made models. The familiarity of the components will help children relate to science as a natural day-to-day occurrence, rather than something that happens only in a lab or a science class.

ILP has created digital content (digital lessons, activities, and quizzes) for all chapters in science for grades 4-10, mapped to the NCERT syllabus. This content is available in editable Microsoft PowerPoint format here, https://www.ilpnet.org/resources/, and it complements the ILP Science Experiment Kit.

Till date, since 2016, 16645 science kits have been distributed by ILP reaching over 11,634 schools. During the last academic year (2022-23) alone, 7,349 kits covering about 5,817 schools across eight states were distributed by ILP.ย

Another critical aspect of the science kit, is the training imparted to teachers enabling them to use this. Over 12,000 teachers in Government Higher Primary and High Schools across multiple states have been trained till date.ย

The kits have also empowered the teachers to organize science events. Last year, as part of the National Science Day observed on 28th February every year, saw a participation of over 1000 schools in Tumakuru district of Karnataka, one of the places where MDLS is being implemented.ย ย

Do reach out to any ILP volunteers to know how this can be brought to a government school near you.ย

Curiosity is the mother of science…

Tapping this curiosity in students is India Literacy Project’s science kits.

The science kits provide a space for children to observe, understand, experiment, and discuss various aspects of science and the things around them.

Students can touch, feel and build without fear of breaking expensive items.

The science kit covers:

  • 200+ chemistry, physics, and biology concepts
  • Everyday items along with a few specialized components
  • A detailed manual containing items required and setup and concepts
  • Experiment videos, manuals, and a structured training program

The science kit is aligned with NCERT curriculum from grades 5 10.

The goal of the science kits is not just to simplify subject understanding, but also to increase scientific temper.

So, how and where does the STEM mindset stem from?

India Literacy Project believes that STEM is not a class you teach, it is a culture you build.

But what exactly does the STEM mindset inculcate?

A mindset grounded in STEM, above all values the process of inquiry. A mindset grounded in STEM, utilizes the scientific methodology to derive evidence-based conclusions, in order to comprehend the workings of phenomena and determine what to accept, recognize prospects and hazards, make informed decisions, take appropriate measures, and foresee probable outcomes.

India Literacy Project’s Multi-Dimensional Learning Space (MDLS) program encompasses experiential learning, digital classrooms, skill development via ICT, career guidance, and libraries. All in all, a 360-degree approach to augment the STEM culture.

As part of the MDLS program, experiential learning provides comprehensive science lab in a box for grade 5th to 10th and Google earth-based content for Social Science.

The Digital Classrooms aspect of MDLS helps enhance subject competency by providing open source, editable content mapped to the state syllabus guidelines for grades 4th to 10th in Maths, Science and Social Science.

The Skill Development aspect implements ICT in school education by following Technology Assisted Learning Programme (TALP) guidelines and using NCERT-recommended tools.

To augment the STEM mindset, inculcating the reading habit is of utmost importance. And this is done by setting-up child friendly libraries in schools with regular Reading Level Assessments (RLA) being conducted.

And the other important cog in the wheel is the Career Guidance program which uses self-discovery tools and psychometric tests to provide career guidance thereby empowering students to achieve their dreams with confidence.

Cultivating this mindset right from school age not only helps the individual student but also the economy. Especially, in a young country like India with a large youth demographic, STEM education could become a major driver of future economic growth.

Attaining 21st-century competencies and a STEM mindset, characterized by digital proficiency, critical thinking, and innovative problem-solving skills, could empower our young women in particular to create multifaceted futures and careers. This, in turn, could enhance their chances of attaining professional and financial mobility while also developing their ability to question, experiment and foster their individual identity.

In addition to training young men and women, training teachers on alternate teaching methods, along with some form of enablement to support them in becoming change agents is crucial to help boost girlsโ€™ interest and confidence and also deal with parentsโ€™ awareness of the issues surrounding stereotypes.

India Literacy Project takes pride in having signed an MoU with the Government of Karnataka with the aim of reimagining the education system around a STEM framework and the curricula adapted to include critical thinking, a scientific temperament, problem solving skills and aptitude towards creativity and innovation.

The humble stats of setting up Science labs across 10,000 schools benefitting 3 million students prove that STEM education has been a key driver since the last decade and will continue to be a key driver of the future of work.

ILP’s 360-degree approach can support the systemic growth of digital literacy and access to technology in India and trigger a much-needed shift towards making STEM education a reality irrespective of gender.

Children learn as they play. Most importantly in play, children learn how to learn. O. Fred Donaldson, Ph. D. , Play Researcher

India literacy project’s mission of being a catalyst for 100% educated India is rooted in the fundamentals that activity/play based learning prepares students effectively for the future by developing in them critical skills such as problem solving, collaboration, and creativity.

Activity-based learning emphasizes that children learn best through hands-on experiences and active exploration, rather than simply receiving information passively.

India Literacy Project’s flagship experiential learning program Multi-dimensional Learning Space (MDLS) is one such program which nurtures scientific temper in students.

India literacy project also ties-up with various other local ngos across various states to teach primary and secondary school students via activity-based learning integrated with school syllabus.

Not just for students, but India literacy project even ensures teachers are trained in these activity-based methodologies and also mothers are trained during Anganwadi intervention programs.

Everybody knows that science is fun. The more you learn, the easier it is to have fun with it.

Students from Tiruvallur, Villupuram and Cuddalore will experience the magic of science with 800 science kits donated by Verizon

India Literacy Project is proud to train a total of 177 middle, high, and higher secondary school teachers on using these science kits.

The teachers can effectively engage students to ensure this experiential learning during their formative years’ paves way for bright careers as they grow up.

The teachers were also trained on CSM (Career Guidance, Scholarship and Mentoring) program. The Chief Education Officer Tiruvallur (Education Department), District Welfare Officers of Tiruvallur, Villupuram and Cuddalore also issued orders to all teachers on duty to attend training provided by India Literacy Project.

As there are schools with single school teachers and primary schools (with teachers not being present in the school will disturb the school functioning if they have to go for training) India Literacy Project is conducting separate online science kit training for these teachers.
